There has to be a pretty good reason or two or three to get most of us to consider juicing. My list might have you headed for the store.
I want to clarify that by juicing we do not mean the stuff you buy in the store. Nope. That is a far cry from juicing fresh produce. You cannot get all the nutritional benefits from “juice off a shelf.”

Reason 1 – A way to get enough veggies and fruits:
It’s doubtful there are many among us will “eat” the recommended 6 to 8 servings a day. It would be hard to do even if we really wanted to. Believe me, I have tried to eat that much produce in a day. Nope, it ain’t gonna happen. But I can easily drink it.
Reason 2 – Weight Loss.
If you start juicing you may find you will eat less. By juicing you get a big blast of nutrients that your body needs. It’s fuel for our whole system. It helps our body do what it is supposed to do rather than working overtime to process everything from that fast food meal you just ate.
A 8oz glass of fresh juice along with a piece of toast may fill you up enough that you forget the drive thru on your way to work. The extra energy we get from juicing also contributes to more exercise and better calorie absorption which can result in dropping a few pounds. Doing a “juice detox” has become popular for both health and weight loss.
Reason 3 – Vitamin & Mineral absorption.
Our body absorbs and digests raw juice so much better and faster than eating it. We can receive a lot more of the needed nutrients, vitamins and minerals that our body needs to function at it’s best.
Reason 4 – Reduce sugar cravings.
Sugar from produce are naturally occurring and our body absorbs them at a natural rate and process that allows the body to utilize the sugar. Far different then the dumping method of processed sugar that causes the excess sugar to end up stored as fat. When we start juicing we can often tamp that sugar craving down by getting the natural sugars from the fruits and veggies.
A few addition reasons to juice. It gives us a blast of nutrients that can result in a stronger immune system, less illness, faster recovery, better digestion, more balanced hormones, and increase our energy. We may even see a big improvement in our hair, skin and nails.
Juice is highly perishable. You may read about making up juice or smoothies a week ahead. Ah.. Please don’t try that at home. There are no preservatives in fresh juice. It is best when you drink it right after you make it.
I generally make more than I want to drink at the moment and will put the excess in small mason jar and store in the fridge for later or even the next day. 24 hours is really as long as you should keep fresh juice. I have heard about freezing it in “freezer safe” jars but have never tried that.
If your new to juicing, please do not start out with strong leafy greens that may turn you away from juicing before you even get started. Start out with vegetables that are not bitter. For a mild green juice I suggest the following:
Cucumber is a really good one to use as your juice base. A little celery can add a nice flavor addition. Don’t forget a herb or two. Fresh parsley is a favorite of mine. So is fresh cilantro but in small amounts as it can be quite strong. Lastly you can add just a small amount of leafy greens. Spinach is a good starter. For added flavor you might like a little lemon or lime juice and/or a small slice of ginger. If you still feel it might be to strong, go ahead and add a quarter of a green apple.
